The Traverse City Toxic Cherries embarked on a historic first in their derby history when they battled Michigan’s top-ranked (of non-WFTDA-sanctioned teams) Motor City Disassembly Line in a closed “hangover” bout at the Kaliseum in Kalkaska.  However, the early start time did not work in the Toxics’ favor, as they were defeated by MCDL 186 – 62 for their first loss of 2014.

The Disassembly Line – fresh off of a victory over the Small Town Outlaws the previous night – used swarms of blockers to disrupt the Toxics’ jammers throughout the bout.  TC remained within striking distance, but penalty trouble allowed MCDL to pull out to a 100 – 30 advantage at the half.  Motor City continued to pad their lead thanks to a steady diet of continued tenacity by their blockers.  The  relentless pursuit and never-say-die approach by MCDL’s blockers forced the Toxic Cherries’ jammers to expend additional energy just to separate themselves from the pack, which narrowed the window for scoring opportunities.  More penalty trouble by TC allowed Motor City to extend the lead and skate off with the second victory in as many days.  Skrillasourus Wrecks was named MVP Jammer for TC, while Jayna Jameson took home MVP Blocker for the Toxics.

The Toxic Cherries will have a quick turn-around following the closed bout vs. MCDL.  The Toxics play host to the Forest City Thames Fatales as part for TCRD’s 2014 home bout opening doubleheader on Saturday, May 17th.  Meanwhile, the Cherry Bombs will square off against Dead River Derby in the second half of the doubleheader.  Visit tcrollerderby.com or find Traverse City Roller Derby on Facebook for more details.
