Saturday marked the return of fast-paced roller derby action to the Grand Traverse Civic Center, as Traverse City Roller Derby kicked off their 2014 home season with a doubleheader featuring the Toxic Cherries and Cherry Bombs. The Toxic Cherries defeated the Forest City Thames Fatales 231 – 45, while the Cherry Bombs lost to Dead River Derby 305 – 53.
The Toxics led from the opening whistle, rolling with a steady rotation at jammer of Edgy Cate (named MVP Jammer) and Mace Hindu early in the bout. The Thames Fatales found TC’s blockers especially stifling and punishing on this night, as Forest City found themselves trailing by a score of 78 – 27 at the half. The path would not get any easier in the second half, as the Toxics held Forest City to just 18 points in the final 30 minutes. The staunch defense of TC’s walls of blockers – led by MVP Blocker Ninja Nurse – frustrated the Thames Fatales’ jammers all bout long and created no doubt to the final outcome. Jewel C. Starz was named MVP Jammer and Baconator was named MVP Blocker in a losing effort for Forest City.
Much like the Toxic Cherries in the first bout, Dead River stormed out of the pack quickly against the Cherry Bombs in the second bout. The visitors from Marquette took advantage of some early bout jitters by the Bombs by jumping out to a 20 – 0 lead after two jams and never looked back, ultimately forging a halftime lead of 172 – 24. The Bombs used the second half to attempt to develop better communication and cohesion on the track, and looked like a more focused team in the final 10 minutes. Notorious V.I.C. took home MVP Blocker for the Bombs in her first bout of 2014, while Freek On Alysh was named MVP Jammer in her home bout debut. Dead River’s MVP’s were Push Up Daisy at Jammer and Hot Carlie at Blocker.
Next up for Traverse City Roller Derby is a home doubleheader on Saturday, June 21 at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.
